Taylor’s Big Boy Bed

Well, Mr. T is almost 2 weeks old, where does the time go?  Casey and I have adjusted pretty well to the new addition, finally getting somewhat of a routine down.  So far, he has been a great baby.  Mr. T gets up 2 times per night, after his 9:30 feeding.    I take the 1 o’clock feeding and Casey takes the 5 o’clock feeding.  It works pretty well for us, although Casey is getting more excited that I have started to produce a little milk.  He thinks that his 5 o’clock shift will have to be passed off to me very soon.

Casey and I still have the nursery to work on, so we decided to get some of that done yesterday.  (Trying to take advantage of Casey’s last week off before he goes back to work.)  Well, this fell right during Taylor’s nap time, which at this stage is pretty much all day.  We thought it probably wasn’t a good idea to leave him downstairs alone with the dogs, so we brought him to his crib.  Well, let me tell you, he was so content in that crib!  He slept for 4 hours straight, then of course became hungry.  I had to get a picture of his first nap in his big boy bed.

There always has to be a gator watching over him.

Just peacefully dreaming…

It’s amazing how fast time flies, and how quickly he is growing.  We have his 2 week check-up today, so let’s hope that he is continuing to gain some weight and getting stronger every day.  I am trying to cherish this time with him, as I know he won’t be this small for long!

Until next time…

Merry Christmas!

This year, Casey and I were fortunate enough to meet our little guy before Christmas and celebrate as a family.  We already knew that we would not be traveling to Florida, as I would have been very close to my due date, but Mr. T had a different plan.  He surprised us and decided to come 10 days before Christmas!  Although we were completely surrounded by family, we had a great Christmas.  We went over to our neighbor’s house for Christmas Eve, and had a great time playing games with the kids and enjoying each others company.  I am so thankful that we live in a neighborhood where people are so welcoming.  They even invited us over for Christmas, but we of course wanted to spend our first Christmas as a family at home.  It wasn’t the usual Christmas that Casey and I are used to, no big dinner, there weren’t many gifts under the tree, but there was one special addition that took place of all of that, our beautiful son.  (Well, handsome. Casey is starting to tell me I have to say handsome, since he is a boy.)

It was so much fun to be able to share Christmas as a family, even though Taylor won’t remember any of it, I will and that’s what makes it special.  We started our own traditions, something that was passed down from each side of our families.  Casey read The Night Before Christmas, and we watch “A Christmas Carol.”  Casey’s dad has read The Night Before Christmas to the Smith kids forever, and that was one tradition that we had to implement into our family.  Casey did a great job reading, although he said he needed practice.  Taylor fell asleep in my arms during story time, but it was great none the less!  The movie comes from my side.  My dad and I usually watch this movie the day after Thanksgiving, “to get into the holiday spirit,” as my dad would say.  He loves this movie, and I know that Taylor will as well some day.

We hope that everyone had a fabulous Christmas surrounded by loved ones.  Enjoy the first few photos of Taylor from his photo shoot.  I think he looks precious, but I am partial, we hope you love them too!

Happy Birthday Taylor Ryan Smith!!!

Mr. Taylor Ryan Smith made his grand appearance on December 15, 2010

6 lbs. 10 oz.

20 1/2 inches

Taylor born

With every birth, there is a story, and this one is no different.  Taylor took us by surprise to say the least, but we couldn’t be more excited.  So, here it goes…

And apologies that it is so long.

On Wednesday morning, I woke up as usual to the sound of the alarm at 7 am with Casey to have our usual breakfast.  I suddenly had the biggest urge to pee, and as soon as I stood up, whoosh!  Nothing else could describe that feeling.  I was slightly confused, but I made it to the bathroom for another gush of water.  I thought, “Well, I guess I really had to pee.”  I had heard of stories of women loosing control of their bladder, and thought that maybe that is just what happened. So, I continued the morning as usual.  I went to let the dogs out, but as I was doing so, I was still leaking and went to the bathroom 5 more times in a matter of 15 minutes.  Casey came down stairs, and I told him I thought something weird happened.  I told him about the series of events, and Casey’s immediate reaction was, “You should call the doctor.”  Well, I didn’t want to be one of those women who go to the hospital and they tell you, “You just peed yourself, go home.”  So I depended on what else? GOOGLE! I Googled “How do you know your water broke” and every sign pointed to that.  I came out of the computer room, and told Casey that I should call the doctor. (Casey of course rolled his eyes and gave me the “I told you so look.”)  As soon as I explained the situation, I was told to go directly to the hospital and they would let them know I was on my way.  Well, the nursery isn’t done, the hospital bag wasn’t packed, and the house was a mess, but Taylor was on his way, and there was nothing I could do about it.

When we arrived at the hospital, my pants were drenched again, and they were about to do the litmus paper test to see if indeed my water broke, but the nurse took one look at me and said, “We don’t need to check you, let’s get you into a room.”  We checked into our beautiful suite, flat screen plasma and all and prepared to have a baby!!  So many different emotions were running through my mind, excitement, trepidation, curiosity were just to name a few. I was still up in the air regarding an epidural, I asked many questions and decided to go ahead and do without for the time being, but let the nurse know that I didn’t want to get to far where I no longer had the option.  They checked me and determined that I was at 0-1, but my cervix was already paper thin, so they started me on a Pitocin drip to get things rolling.  I was just relaxing, watching TV, and completely comfortable.  I thought, wow, this isn’t so bad, a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable.  I even asked, “What do contractions feel like?”  Well, let me tell you what they felt like to me: a knife stabbing me in the stomach, and then followed by someone coming over and hitting me with a baseball bat repeatedly so I couldn’t breathe.  I was getting through them, then they started getting much closer together, as in I could barely catch my breathe until the next one was beginning. I began to throw up as well because of the pain and that’s when I yelled to Casey, “Get me whatever they have!”  They placed the epidural when I was dilated to 4-5 (which I was more afraid of than labor) and it was pure heaven.  I could feel the pressure of the contractions, but the pain was a distant memory, until I was 8-9 and the loading dose of the epidural wore off.  They reloaded the dose, and then came the pushing.  I wish I could say that pushing was great, and not painful, but that would be a bold faced lie.  It was hard, it was painful and it was a workout!  I pushed for an hour and a half, not bad for the first baby they tell me, but that hour and a half went by sooooooo slow! Casey was a great coach, and guided me through the whole thing like a champ.  He even put up with me when I just looked at him crying saying, “I can’t do it.”  He just kept telling me I was doing great, and I was almost there.  The best pushes I had was when I was pissed.  Not at Taylor or anyone else, I just wanted this baby out!!!  Finally he crowned.  I then gave the nurse a look of pure shock!  No one told me that the baby stays there like a constant contraction until you can fully push the baby through the last stretch of tissue.  I finally had one last set of pushes and out came our beautiful baby boy!

Casey was able to hold him first, since Taylor had to go straight to the warmer because he was a little early, but this picture of him was worth waiting to hold him.  You can just see the excitement on his face that he is a daddy.  He did cut the cord, and was sprayed with blood, something I thought was funny.

Taylor born2

I also wish I could say that I will forget all the pain, like many women say, but that isn’t true either.  I will definitely have more children, don’t get me wrong, I will just know what to expect next time. It is true, however, it was all worth it to have this little man looking up at me when I say his name or hears my voice. To see his beautiful eyes take in the world around.  To see his daddy absolutely head over heels in love with his son. To feel his skin on my skin.  To be able to comfort him with a simple mother’s touch. And so many other things that I know will be coming.  I thought I had a couple more weeks, but I am so thankful that I didn’t have to wait to meet this wonderful person who has already blessed us with so much happiness.

Taylorborn3

I guess he just wanted to be here for Christmas.  He knew that his daddy and I would be alone and couldn’t bear it.

It’s been too long…

I know it has been pushing on 2 months since I last posted something, and I promise I will try to be better about it!  I can’t believe how much time can get away from you.  Casey and I are in the midst of winter, and still trying to get everything ready before Taylor makes his appearance in less than 30 days!!!  (At least we hope.) Work has been hectic, trying to get everything in order before my 12 week leave, and still trying to give the pups the attention the deserve, something that will probably fall by the way side in January.  We have finished decorating for Christmas, and I hope that Taylor will make his appearance while the decorations are still up, maybe a late Christmas present…only he knows when he will make his grand debut.

On a side note, Casey and I have survived our first REAL snow storm.  I am not joking when I say it snowed for about 24 hours straight.  I wasn’t able to help with the shoveling, but we did get to play outside in the Minnesota Blizzard.  Now, we are preparing for the sub-zero temperatures for the next couple of days.  It will be a great time to finish the nursery!  I have hung the picture frames, made his bed, and packed the hospital bag, so we are ready whenever he is.  I hope everyone else is having a great holiday season, and is staying much warmer than we are up here!  Enjoy the couple of pictures!

Another Perfect Day

It’s been awhile since both Casey and I have had a day off during the week to just get things done around the house.  It was wonderful to be home with my hubby, spending quality time other than the time we spend at night.  We spent the morning eating breakfast together, a new ritual we do every morning, with Casey enjoying his morning cup of coffee, that’s right he drinks coffee! We may need to get two coffee makers when Mr. Taylor makes his debut since we don’t agree on a flavor.  After that, Casey went to work for a little bit, and I stayed home sewing and decorating, two of my favorite pastimes.  Although I didn’t get any pictures of the Halloween decorations today, here are some of the fall decorations that we have welcoming guests on our front porch.

I love the scarecrows, and it’s the first year we put up the corn stalks, a new favorite.  It is so festive to drive up and see all these decorations.  Now that the weather is getting somewhat cooler, it is beginning to actually feel like fall is coming.  It is crazy to think that this week last year, we had 2 1/2 inches of snow with an average temperature of 46 degrees!  This year, no snow in the forecast and an average temperature of 74!  Almost 30 degrees warmer!  What is going on?!  I can’t say that I am complaining, because I know what we have in store for us, but I am excited for the snow.  Maybe it is because as soon as the snow comes, I know that is just closer to when we will have our little one in our arms.  As many of you know, I love to sew now!  I am getting better with each project, and I love the way they turned out.  I have made 2 quilts for Taylor, and can’t wait to wrap him up in them!  They are so comfy and soft, and I feel accomplished that I actually made them.

The other project we have been working on is the hallway up the stairs.  I have hated that hallway since we have moved in, never quite figuring out what to do with it.  I had the pictures that were on our tables at the wedding up the stairs, but I still didn’t really like it.  The color was boring, and I always find stairs hard to decorate over.  Well, we finally figured out what to do!  Casey chose this burnt orange color that looks great and brightens the hallway up.  We also ordered these canvas photos I have wanted since our wedding.  I was nervous to order them online, but when they came in the mail, I couldn’t have been more excited!  They turned out better than I could have imagined and will be ordering some newborn pictures when the time comes.  I am not sure if you can see them that well in the pictures, and the hallway isn’t quite finished being painted, but I couldn’t wait any longer to show how they look against the partially painted wall.

IMG_4259

We also put a monogram up on the wall going down the stairs, which we will be putting baby pictures in!  Yes, it is an empty frame hanging up there now, but only for a little less than 3 months!  I can’t believe how fast time is flying, and I know the rest will go by even faster.  Less than 90 days.

Until next time…enjoy fall, and everything else this season has to offer!  Can’t wait to see family in a month and a half!

Marathon Number 3

IMG_4220

A week ago, Casey ran his third marathon.  It was a beautiful Sunday morning, no rain or cold weather in sight.  It was the perfect setting.  Although he did not quite finish in the time that he had hoped, but he did run the first 18 miles at a 3:20 pace, which was a little better than last year, but that is where he hit “the wall.”  I am not quite sure what “the wall” is, but he and Pops assure me that there is one, and it is pretty hard to get over.  I must admit, I was sad when I saw him at mile 18 and he seemed a little disappointed, but at the same time I was so proud! How many people say they ran a marathon?  Then, how many people say they run a marathon every year?  There were still the usual characters running the race, a princess (fully decked out from a tiara to her princess dress), the barefoot runner, the body builders, and the dad pushing his disabled daughter in a running wheelchair.  Every time I go watch Casey run, I get the urge to start running more.  Well, this year, I decided I will definitely be running the Medtronic Twin Cities 10 mile.  I am so excited, and can’t wait to start training.  The course is so beautiful, hopefully I will be able to run the full marathon one day, but I will settle for the 10 mile, since I can’t start training until February.  It was great to be able to meet Casey on the course at 4 different stops with Pops, hopefully next year there will be some more people running the race, that means you Pops!  Until next time, hope you enjoy the photos of the most beautiful urban marathon in America!

Oh How I Love Fall!

Since moving up to the northern tundra, one of my favorite things is the beauty of fall.  I love to decorate, I love the changing leaves, and I love that it is the start of the holiday season!  Keeping with our new fall ritual, we went to Banning State Park.  This year we had a wonderful visitor and were able to show him what our beautiful state offers. Here are some pictures of our hike.

IMG_4165IMG_4103IMG_4158 IMG_4138 I hope that everyone is enjoying fall as much as we are!  Decoration pictures are coming soon!

House Divided

IMG_4069This year marked the first year that USF played UF.  Now, I have always been a Gator fan, even before meeting Casey, but after having graduated from USF, I just couldn’t NOT support my alma mater.  It was so much fun to trash talk Casey the week before and take down all of the Gator Flags outside.  Deep down everyone knew who would win, but it was great leading up to the game.  We dressed the dogs up in our respective schools, I baked yummy cupcakes, and we sat and watched the game together, both screaming at the television during stupid plays and even me laughing when Brantley got worked.  Especially the first drive, 3 and out.  I think Casey was a little worried during the first half, with USF keeping up and all.  However, the Gators finally turned it on during the second half.

 IMG_4064  IMG_4065IMG_4066

A little bit of rivalry before the game.  I think Aspen won the fight. :)

IMG_4072 IMG_4071

It was great to see USF playing with the big dogs, even if they didn’t win, I  am proud to be a BULL!

I did put up all of the Gator gear, and luckily, my hubby still loves me, and we can be friendly rivals, at least until the first onesie is worn by our son. ;)

It’s A Boy!

On Monday, we had our 20 week ultrasound.  Throughout the past 20 weeks, I had been unsure as to whether I wanted to know what the sex of our baby was.  When we did the fun 3D ultrasound, they couldn’t tell because our little one did not cooperate.  I took that as a sign that maybe I shouldn’t know, but as soon as I walked into the ultrasound room and the nurse said we may be able to determine the gender, I just couldn’t resist.  After taking several pictures of the head and seeing our beautiful baby move all around, flipping and turning toward his momma, she started measuring the legs.  She did a couple of passes and Casey and I looked at each other, thinking a girl probably shouldn’t have that extra something down there.  It was pretty obvious, but she finally stopped on this picture and said, “There’s the third leg.” I of course started crying, I will blame pregnancy hormones, but it was just an amazing feeling to know what we will be having.  It definitely makes everything a little more real. Please pardon the flash, our scanner is on the frits.

Everything looked healthy with our little man, weighing in at about 1 pound already!  We saw his heart, diaphragm, toes, fingers, mouth, kidneys, and everything else in between.  Here are a couple more pictures.  We didn’t get a superb profile picture, but we did get the reassurance that he is healthy, really all that matters.

Summer Visitors

This summer, Ryan and Missy were finally able to make the long trek to Minnesota.  It was so great to spend time with them and show them what great weather Minnesota has to offer.  We were lucky this year, as last year it was rather cool.  They timed it well, because the weather couldn’t have been better.  Not too hot, but not cool either.  We were able to go out on the lake and show them around. Casey’s company happened to be hosting Movie on Minnetonka, which was a lot of fun.  Everyone tied up at Big Island and just hung out.  It was great to be able to show Ryan and Missy how people “boat” in Minnesota.  It was a great time, except for the one couple who didn’t know how to drive their 47 foot boat and almost ran into us!

We also took them up to Banning State Park, one of our favorite hikes!  Casey was nice enough to drive the whole time while we slept for a portion of the trip. Although the leaves weren’t the beautiful fall colors this time, it was still gorgeous.  The river was low enough that we were actually able to wade out in the middle of it and just enjoy nature.  We also hiked to some waterfalls, where Ryan so happened to slice his foot on a wine bottle!  Rather disappointing that someone would litter.  Casey and I are planning on taking another trip up there this fall and spring, but until then here are some of my favorites!
